FAQ
Frequently asked questions about working with me.
Are you available for new projects?
Usually, though availability varies depending on what's currently in flight. The honest answer is: book a free call and I'll tell you straight. If I'm fully booked, I'll say so rather than string you along. If there's a fit, we'll figure out a timeline from there.
How does billing work — fixed price or hourly?
Both, depending on the nature of the work. Well-scoped projects with clear deliverables suit a fixed price. Ongoing work, team augmentation, and exploratory phases typically work better on a time-and-materials basis. We'll agree on the model before anything starts — no surprises.
What's the minimum budget for a project?
Custom software is not cheap, and I won't pretend otherwise. If your budget is a few hundred Rand, I'm not the right fit. If you have a realistic budget for bespoke development and a clear idea of what you need built, let's talk. A free call costs nothing and will quickly tell us both whether there's a match.
Who owns the code when the project is done?
You do. Full stop. Once payment is settled, the intellectual property is yours. This is standard practice and will be clearly stated in our agreement before work begins.
Can you work with my existing development team?
Yes, and honestly some of my most rewarding engagements have been exactly this — stepping into an existing team to fill a skills gap or add capacity. I'm comfortable with code review, mentoring, pairing, and integrating into an established workflow.
What does the engagement process look like from first call to delivery?
It starts with a free 30-minute call to understand what you need and whether we're a good fit. If we are, I'll put together a proposal covering scope, timeline, and cost. Once agreed, we kick off with a planning phase before any code is written. I involve you throughout — you should never feel like your project disappeared into a black box.
Do you work with international clients?
Yes. I'm based in Cape Town, South Africa, but I've worked with clients across Europe, the UK, the US, and beyond. Remote collaboration is entirely normal for me — I'm comfortable with async communication and the occasional odd-hour call to accommodate time zones.
What happens if requirements change mid-project?
Requirements always change — anyone who tells you otherwise hasn't shipped much software. Scope changes are handled transparently: we discuss the impact on timeline and cost, agree on how to proceed, and update the plan. What I won't do is silently absorb scope creep and then surprise you with an invoice.
Do you offer ongoing support after launch?
Yes, on a case-by-case basis. Some clients want a handover and they're done; others want ongoing maintenance and feature development. Both are fine. We'll discuss what makes sense for your situation — I'd rather agree something realistic upfront than leave you stranded post-launch.
How can I get started with no budget at all?
Bootstrapping a business from scratch is hard work, even more so if you have a very limited budget. One way to get going is to do some of the work yourself, but where do you even start? If you want to develop your own solution, you can! It takes a lot of time and effort to build software, but you can save yourself a lot of money by doing some, or, potentially, all of the work, yourself.
